Questions commonly asked by either Cambs.Net users or perspective users

I am not getting any replies to e-mails that I send out?

If you have entered an incorrect e-mail address or format in your own mail program, when people click on reply to author it reads the address you have entered and tried to send to that address. To check this address in outlook express click on TOOLS then ACCOUNTS then on the MAIL tab, you should see your mail account with us in there make sure it is set as default and click on properties. You should see a line that says E-mail Address, pop in your correct address in this box the format should be alias@username.cambs.net or alias@domain.co.uk etc.. now when someone receives a mail from you and clicks on reply to author you will receive a mail back.

I am trying to download my e-mail but I keep getting the same 4 messages again and again but it says there are 5?

Sometimes people send us very large e-mails that can clog your mail delivery, in this case messages 1, 2, 3 & 4 may be normal e-mails but message 5 is probably a mail with large attachments. First try changing the time limit in your mail program, Tools accounts, mail then onto your properties and click on advanced, Move the slider timeout bar from the left as far to the right as it will go (this may give you long enough to download the mail). If you still cannot download it, log into the portal Click on Web Communicator and enter your username and password you can see a preview of the e-mail’s you are trying to download (including filesize) Message 5 can be deleted from here, thus clearing the blockage from your mail account. Use your e-mail as you normally do and you should have fixed the problem!

I have set up a mailbox called mark and my username is sailboats but I am not receiving any mail? Although I am giving out me correct mail address mark@sailboats.cambs.net

Once you have set up a mailbox you need to check that mailbox separately. At present in your mail program the account name (username) will be set to sailboats, this means that it will receive any mail sent to the sailboats account unless a mailbox is set up. Change the account name to sailboats+mark and use the password you assigned at the mailbox section of the portal and you will receive the mail sent to your mailbox. *

*Please note only letters and numbers can be used in mailbox names, hyphens cannot.

I have set up an account today, I can send mail but can not receive any. It says invalid username/password?

When you create an account with us the server needs to pick up on the information you have entered, Our servers currently refresh at every hour. Your account should work fine for sending and receiving after this refresh.

How much webspace can I actually use?

The webspace is unlimited on all Cambs.Net accounts there is however a 250 MB per day bandwidth limit on residential accounts and 500 MB per day on Business accounts (how much data is uploaded/downloaded from your site.

I have made a website and uploaded it without any problems, but when I look at it through my browser some of the images and links don’t work?

The first thing to remember when making a website is that the Internet is case sensitive. This means it knows the difference between Jpg and jpg. If you have told your webpage to display lets say, logo.gif but the actual picture you uploaded is called Logo.gif or logo.GIF it will not find the file and all you will see is a white box with a red cross in it.
For ease name all your pictures and files in lower case and linking them will be much easier.

If you right click on the file that isn’t working properly on your webpage and look what it is actually looking for, then look at the file name that you uploaded, you will see there is a difference. Simply rename the file you uploaded to the one the webpage is looking for.

I have uploaded a newer version of my website, but it looks the same when I visit it?

Sometimes when you visit a page that has changed, your browser doesn’t always show you the current version. It may be showing you a “cached” version, this means it is showing you a page from your hard drive which it stored on your last visit.
Most of the time pressing the Refresh button in your browser will make it download the current version of the web page, if it does not you may want to empty your cache.
To do this go to your windows directory and open the Temporary Internet Files folder, Delete everything that is in there to ensure you are viewing the latest page on your site.

Can I use active server pages on my webspace?

Unfortunately you cannot use .asp files on your webspace at the moment, although you can use frontpage extensions once you have applied for them at the portal

Why can't I connect to some ftp servers?

Most browsers submit "anonymous" as your user ID and your email address as your password. The FTP site you are connecting to may not allow "anonymous" access. This error will also occur when the FTP server is currently at its limit of "anonymous" users. Another possibility is that your browser doesn't support anonymous FTP access.

Keep trying to access the FTP site until you succeed. Sometimes the FTP server is too busy. However, if you don't have a browser that allows anonymous FTP access or the site is password-protected, enter your user ID and password manually using FTP software such as WS_FTP or CuteFTP.

What is an mp3 file? and Can I have them on my website?

mp3 is a compression variant of mpeg, the level is 3 so the file extension
name is.mp3

These files alone are not illegal, but if the music file is copyrighted and
you do not own the rights then displaying or distributing it from your website is illegal.

Can I stream live or real audio from my website?

Unfortunately you cannot stream audio from our servers, these files however can be downloaded and listened to afterwards.

What does permission denied mean?

This error occurs when you are connected with an FTP site and you are either uploading or downloading. Sometimes the site administrator doesn't want you to upload to the site, download a certain file, or access a certain directory. The site may also be too busy.

Check that you are using the correct procedure to upload or download the file. Then keep trying until you succeed. If you still receive the error and know that you're able to upload or download to that site, contact the Webmaster by phone or e-mail.

I want to change my username, is this possible?

Unfortunately this is not possible, but if you wish to change your username then you will need to sign up for a new account.

I have just set up an account with you, I can log on to the Internet, I can send e-mail but I cannot see any web sites?

If you have had any other ISPs on your machine (or recently installed IE5) they may use a proxy server to access web sites, where as we do not. This setting is normally a small box that needs unticking and can be found in different places depending on your browser, here is where to find it.

Internet explorer 3 or 4: Open your browser and click on View then Internet options, click on the connections Tab and untick Use Proxy Server.

Internet Explorer 5: Open your browser and click on Tools and then Internet options, then click on the connections Tab and onto settings, and
untick the Use a Proxy Server box.

Netscape Navigator/Communicator: Open your browser and click on Edit then Preferences, Open the Advanced drop down menu and select Proxies, Tick the Direct connection to the Internet.

I am using FrontPage Express 2000 but whenever I try to publish my page it keeps giving me the same error?

FrontPage 2000 makes an error log whenever it has a problem, instead of trying again it takes a look at the log file and gives you the same error message. If this happens, search for a file on your hard drive called wecerr.txt and delete it, This file can normally be found in your WINDOWS/TEMP folder.

I have a 56k modem, but when I connect it only says I’m connected at 31,000bps?

Sometimes when you connect it only shows your port speed, this is not always the speed that you are actually connected at. If you think that you are only connecting at a very slow speed, make sure you are on the right dial in number for your modem and that you have the latest drivers installed. Also if you have made an extension to reach your computer make sure that the lead from your modem to the phone socket is as short as possible. Another thing is to check how many telephones you actually have connected to your line, the more telephones the more likely you are to get a bad or slow connection. Check with your phone company to see what REN rating your phone line has then look under each telephone in your house, there is usually a REN rating for each particular phone. Add them up and see if you are exceeding the number given to you by your telephone supplier.

I keep getting Error message 404 – File not found when I try to visit a web page, what does it mean?

The requested page has been renamed or is no longer available on the site or the address has been mis-spelt. Try accessing the main

site rather than a folder within the site i.e.

http://www.any-where.com/ Instead of:

http://www.any-where.com/help.html

Whenever I dial in it seems to takes ages connect?

Make sure you are using the correct number for your particular type of modem (see link below) Then click the tab at the top marked server types and make sure only enable software compression and TCP/IP are ticked.

Unticking any other boxes such as log onto network will speed up the time it takes to connect to us.

I normally get a very good connection speed but downloads from some sites are quite slow?

There are a number of factors that can affect this,

The actual speed of the server site you are downloading from.

The actual location of the site.

The amount of traffic currently on the net.

The amount of people downloading from the same server as you.

What does error 400 - Bad Request mean?

You entered a URL that is not accepted as correct. Possibly the server being contacted doesn't recognize the document you are asking for or it may no longer exist. It is also possible that it is correct but you aren't authorized to access it.

Check the URL to see if it's correctly spelled and that every letter is in the right (upper- or lower-) case. Check colons, numbers of slashes, and tildes.

What does error 401 - Unauthorized mean?

The site you are trying to access is protected and you either entered the incorrect password or the host does not want users coming from your domain to enter. Some sites will only allow specific domains to access the site. For example, some U.S. government sites (with the .gov top-level domain name) will only permit users coming from .gov or .edu (educational sites) to gain access. Or some educational sites only allow access from other educational sites.

If you are sure you have access to the site, try typing the password again. If you don't have a password or your domain does not have access to the site, you won't be able to access it.

What does error 403 - Forbidden mean?

You are not permitted to access this document. It is either password-protected or the host does not want your domain to enter.

If you are sure you have access to the site, try typing the password again. If you don't have a password or your domain does not have access to the site, you won't be able to access it.

What does error 404 - Not found mean?

The host server can't find the HTML document at the URL you've entered. Either you have mistyped the URL, the document no longer exists, or you've been given the wrong URL.

If your URL ends in ".htm", try ".html" (and vice versa). To find out whether the site hosting the document is still active, delete everything after the last slash in the URL. If this doesn't work, try deleting the slash and adding .htm or .html to the end. If the site is still running, try and find the page from another location on the site that you can reach.

What does Bad file request mean?

The form you're trying to access is not supported by your browser or there is an error in the form.

Try using a different browser. If the problem persists or another browser is not available, send an e-mail note to the site's Webmaster.

What does Network connection was refused by the server mean?

Some servers have limits on the number of people or request they can handle at a time. If you get this message, the server is probably too busy to handle one more user. When the server doesn't create its own message to handle this error, this generic message is displayed instead.

Try clicking the Reload button until you connect. Or try again later.

What is cache, and can I delete it?

Every time you visit a web page the page itself and the images are stored on your hard drive, this is to speed up your next visit to the page (as long as the page hasnt been changed) they can take up quite a lot of space and most of the time they are un needed. You can easily and safely delete these files from time to time in order to free up space on your hard drive.
To do this, Double click on My Computer then into Control Panel and double click Internet or Internet Options, you will see a section called Temporary Internet Files, click on the Delete_Files button and this will clear your cache.

How do I make my modem redial?

Goto My computer then into Dial-up-networking and click on Connections then Settings. This will bring up a box, place a tick in Redial and enter the relevant times into the delay boxes.
For example: you could type 10 in redial attempts, this would attempt 10 redials before giving up. 0 in minutes and 5 seconds, this will pause for 5 seconds after a failed attempt then retry until it reaches the 10 redials you have specified.

I want to register my domain, but the portal will not let me at the moment. How long will it be before I can register it?

You can only register your domain when you have surftime enabled on your exchange, this is because if you cannot receive SurfTime we do not bill you.

I have a 56K modem. Why isn't my download speed even close to 56K?

There could be several reasons--and most of them aren't your ISP's fault.
First of all, static electricity caused by radio signals, power lines, and other sources interfere with most 56K modem signals, forcing them to fall back to 42-50Kbps.
56K modems also require a clean, straight through telephone connection to the telephone company's central office switching center. Phone company line amplifiers that boost a telephone signal over a long distance, PBX switchboard systems, and other phone equipment alter the phone signal and force 56K modems to fall back to speeds of 33.6Kbps and lower.
Finally, the FCC doesn't allow 56K modems to use the full range of signals that phone company equipment can generate. They're concerned that it'll cause static interference to other phone lines.
So no 56K modem in the United Kingdom ever connects at 56K. Most 56K modem users seem to connect at speeds of 44-48Kbps.
